Motivational Monday… so it’s “new” on the blog, though we’ve been doing it for a long while in Tri-Fecta.

So what is this nonsense all about here, you might ask?

I’m working on new features here at the Mothership, so here’s the first one. Or, at least some of the same kinds of content but with a new name. Today, well, it’s Monday. And I know I’ve been posting motivational stuff all along, but now it’s got a new fancy title. And a hashtag. So that makes it new… Right?

And who doesn’t need a little extra motivation, most especially on Mondays!

So, there seems to be two types of triathletes in the world. The kind who listens to music while they’re training, and the kind who don’t.

[And for real, some people are serious about their beliefs.]

Personally, the whole “there’s no music on race day and therefore I don’t train with it and you shouldn’t either” isn’t a valid argument to me.  I always train with music, and I never even notice on race day—there’s so much to see and hear to keep me occupied.  Next, if YOU want to train with music, then DO IT–who cares what other people think.

However, some folks like to hear their breathing, the birds, etc… and that is cool.  I don’t want to hear my huffing and puffing. 🙂

Safety caveat: make sure that you are running safely with music.  Do not run with noise-cancelling headphones – you should still be able to hear things around you.  Always remember to run against traffic, and ride with the traffic. And never wear headphones when riding–like, never.

We all know we’ve got it inside of ourselves (or maybe we don’t. Maybe we are just scratching the surface!).  But let’s face it, we all have those days when we need that extra push.

I often think music is just the thing to push us forward.

And maybe, just maybe, a few of my tunes will help get you to the bitter end of that 15-mile run or that two-hour bike trainer session.

[Because we never wear headphones while we’re riding on the roads, right?! Right. I’m serious. No way, dudes.]

So! If you’re the kind who does listen to music, here’s a Spotify Motivational Music Monday playlist aptly named “Just Keep Moving Forward”. It features some of my favorite running songs right now, plus a whole lot more.

So, let me know what you think.

And are you the music type, or not? If so, what are some of your favorite training songs? I’m sure we could all use some fresh beats to add to our training playlists.

So with this new feature, leave a comment and let me know what kinds of things YOU want to see for the Motivational Monday posts?

  1. Well that’s strange and annoying. What browser are you using? It seems to be working fine for me in Chrome.

  2. I love listening to my friends motivational clips during my runs. Always gives me that extra push.

  3. To add a quick something to your running w/music comment. I was never a “runner” (hell, I’m barely one now), but the 2 things that I found helped me get going when I decided to use a Couch 2 5K program was a great bra and using music. In the past I was always so preoccupied with my breathing and the impact my steps had on it and wondered if it was my boobs bouncing too much that made me breath like that. I mean, it was a terrible circle of “this isn’t working”. When I finally got a great bra and drowned out most of my breathing with music, it was a different experience.

  4. And to answer your question: What you should be written in a Monday Motivational post? I would go with these things: stuff to look for at the end of your training week, a longer quote about pushing yourself, a reflexion on how sport changes you (in a good way), races to look for in the near future. And a picture of a new bike.

  5. I love the song ‘The Lion, the Beast, the Beat’ by Grace Potyer and the Nocturnals. It builds and then unleashes. I also love running to Tupac’s ‘California Love.’ Lastly, ‘Freedom 90’ by George Michael. I never tire of these 3 on a playlist.

  6. I love playlists! Here are a few on my list.
    Fireproof by Coleman Hell
    Me too by Meghan Trainor
Good to be Alive by Andy Grammer
Better When I’m Dancin’ by Meghan Trainor
Uma Thurman by Fall Out Boy
    Love Runs Out by OneRepublic

  7. Any way you can just leave the playlist in the comments? Can’t download Spotify, but would love the whole list!

  8. Is this playlist available somewhere or would I have to download all of the songs individually? Oh and Pearl Jam, Just Breathe, swoon.

  9. Hi Jen, you can download it straight from Spotify into your own Spotify account. Another commenter also graciously added it into Google Play (above), if that works better for you! Happy listening 🙂

  10. Hi Leanne, would the Google Play list that Alexandre created work better? It’s an extremely long list so adding it into the comments wouldn’t work too well.
