Today was the first “race” for the Swim Bike Kids.

Not watching… but rather, participating.  I had planned to run the 5k, but my knee is still iffy, so instead, the Expert and I just took the Swim Bike Kids out to the race for their first “Tot Trot.”

The Boy SBK is the oldest. He’s almost 5.  His nickname in our house is “Captain Careful,” but because he is timid and pretty much waits for the lead of his daredevil sister, the younger Girl SBK, almost 4.

This race was no exception. The Girl SBK was stoked.  The Boy SBK… not so much.

At the starting line, they both wanted to me to hold their hands.

The Boy SBK refused to run at all until I promised that I would run with him and that it “really wasn’t a race.”

(Although you can’t tell from this picture that the Girl was excited.)

I held the Girl SBK’s hand too.  BUT… after “go!” was announced… the rest was history.

Here’s some lessons in pictures from the wee ones.  I’m so proud of my little SBKs.

Here’s the start of the race. This is when the director said, “Go!”

The Girl SBK , looked around, saw that it was a race… and she took off running… at an impressive speed.  The Boy SBK and I maintained our own, steady pace.

(She must be Mountain Goat’s daughter.)

(The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.)

(Be proud of yourself.)

(Enjoy your bling.)

(Show off your bling.)

And…

  1. Too cute! Don’t worry, I was kid #1, a worrier and wanting to stay in my comfort zone, but my parents were gently encouraging, and now I love to try new things and compete. My brother was kid #2, he’s a fireman!

  2. Love love this 🙂 my own kids are very similar, #2 being the doer and #1 being the follower, each having their own strengths. Your picture story made me a little verklempt 🙂

  3. Meredith… I ABSOLUTELY love this post!!! Congrats to both kiddos and kudos to you momma for getting them out there and teaching them some important lessons!

  4. How wonderful – it’s never easier to teach them than it is right now. My oldest is 5 and my youngest is not quite 2. We have the same dynamic at our house.
I was the cautious (not daring at all) one, and my son (5) is also. I didnt find poeple in my life to push me outside of my comfort zone until I was in my 30’s…I dont want him to wait that long.
I have so many people around me that support me and encourage me once I commit to a “crazy” idea like a triathlon, but not many that encourage me to commit to begin with. I’m extra grateful for those poeple lately! I want to be that for him and it sounds like you’re a great example for your son as well!
My challenge: making sure I nudge and encourage without pushing too hard!
I’ll listen closely to any and all advice you have on that!!

  5. Hadn’t seen this and just wanted to say how wonderful I think it is and how great to tell your son it’s ok as long as he tries… what a lesson! Thanks!
