  1. Thanks for all of the suggestions! I’m a 42 y.o. fmorerly fat chick who started running last year to lose weight. I’ve done five 5K’s and two 10K’s now and started biking and swimming to exercise when I managed to injure myself secondary to an addictive personality and thinking I could jump up in miles WAY too fast.I have now decided I want to do a sprint tri (see addictive personality mentioned above..haha) My main fear is the biking portion. I hadn’t ridden a bike in roughly 25 years and am using a beat up mountain bike my kid acquired for me. I don’t know how to work gears .I mean I know how to change gears but am never sure which gear I need to be in. And I’ve not biked more than about 4 miles yet as finding places to ride is difficult where I live.I know NOTHING of tri-training but the best advice I received was to take at least one swimming lesson. I can swim well enough to not drown but no where near enough to race. I am enrolled in a series of 4 intermediate swim lessons at the local Y and can honestly say it’s the best money I’ve ever spent even if I never do get to try a tri. After one lesson I felt like I never really knew how to swim until then. I now feel like I can make it through the swim portion. Now if the Y gave biking lessons! And if I may offer one more piece of advice as a non-triathloner .Ebay and TJMaxx are your friends. I found a great pair of bike shorts at a sporting goods store for 80$ well out of the range I intended to spend on a sport I may only try once. I found the same pair on ebay for 4$ and at TJMaxx for 20$.I know I’m not qualified to offer advice on training for this sport, but as a mom of two one of which is in college I do feel qualified to offer thoughts on saving money to get started. So far I’m down about 100$ and if I’d known I could get goggles at TJMaxx it would have been less. Now all I’m lacking are biking skills and information and happily, this site has helped immensely!
