In true to form, when the going gets tough, I break something. 🙂

After having a really great 15 weeks of training and gains, an MRI revealed that I have the likes of a tibia stress fracture.

I am out of weight-bearing activities for 8 weeks: also known as ETERNITY.  [Of course, it’s not, really.]

And I really DO have a great perspective and attitude about it.

Nothing much I can do, really.  My Oceanside 70.3 is out, for the obvious reasons, but I am totally going to be there anyway… tickets are purchased, baby!  I dislike the DNS… but in this case, it’s necessary, and there’s nothing to be done about it.  [I can’t even ride the course and walk the half marathon… (yes, I asked). 🙂 ]

In times of injury, the only thing to do is focus on what you CAN DO… not on what you can’t.  I can do lots of swimming and core and upper body, throwing in some non-impact trainer riding… and then in 8 weeks, it’s back to the sneakers and running.

Time flies when you have fun.

So I’ll do just that, and be back to running and hill climbing on the bike in no time.

  1. Sorry to hear! I had a stress fracture in my foot during training last year and found deep water running to be a great replacement to the running. I was able to stay with my training plan- just replacing the running with deep water running.

  2. Well maybe we will bump into one another in Oceanside:) love a picture with the famous swim bike mom!

  3. The water at Oceanside is going to be cold anyway 😉 I had to drop out of it last year because of a car accident. Life goes on and I’m doing it this year. Triathlon is a fun way to stay fit, but so is yoga!!!!

  4. Sorry to hear this! I was looking forward to seeing you out on the Oside course. You could still do the swim right??? Or maybe you purchased the insurance so you can get your money back and spend it on your trip. The Grey whales are migrating right now. I highly recommend a whale/dolphin watching cruise on Oceanside Whale Watching.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear it. I know it seems like eternity now, but it will pass more quickly than you think. I’ve had 4 stress fractures, including one in the tibia. I did a lot of pool running and swimming, and after the doc said it was ok, I could ride on my trainer with no standing. It’s also a good idea to have a physical therapist check your form to see if there are any mechanical issues contributing to it. You have my sympathy! Maybe your kids can help bedazzle your boot!

  6. I needed to read this today. I’ve dealing with a tore plantar fascia and have been n a boot for 10 days (have two more weeks, then a recheck). I miss running!

  7. Oh man that’s a bummer. I know how you feel. I ended up with a pelvic stress fracture after my spring marathon last year. I was out for 12 weeks. I’m back at it now and hoping for an injury free tri season.

  8. So sorry this has happened. Luckily when I started feeling shin split pain last season, I switched to elliptical for the last six weeks before my half Ironman. My brother warned me that continued training would lead to a stress fracture. I also did pool running.

Guess what? Elliptical mimics running so closely, I would do a ten minute pace for 8-10 miles.

I was so nervous going into the half because I didn’t know if it would translate. It did!

I say all this in case this turns out to be a longer recovery than anticipated. You can still race.

  9. Great perspective and SO glad you’re accepting the things you cannot change. Take care.

  10. Dealing with injury is so tough. I did my first Tri in October 2014 and two weeks later had hip surgery. I am now recovering from my 3rd hip surgery and long to be on my bike riding. I figured I needed to learn the hard lesson of patience and that is why I am going through all of this.

  11. I’m with you on the THIS SUCKS department. Right now I’m weighing the pros and cons of pacing the Ann Arbor Marathon with a supposedly stress-fractured foot. Did you know there is actually a record for completing a marathon on crutches? 5:30-something. ??? Sounds like you’ve got a plan, which is great! Don’t follow bad examples (like yours truly).

  12. Oside is my town! Let me know if you need any workouts – 10 years of coaching experience to help alleviate the black line of boredom if you like. 🙂

Looking forward to seeing all of you here!

  13. I should say swimming and water polo coaching… not enough coffee on a Thursday…

  14. So I just found your blog through a friend, and sidelined from running (due to an unconfirmed tibial stress fracture), I’m inspired to give tri a go. First stage: convert from breaststroke! So baby steps (strokes). Injured or not, you’re an inspiration.
