1) Riding the spin bike is more important than putting away my laundry.

2) Thus I have my priorities in proper order: workout before clothes.

3) I cannot believe how hard a twenty minute “ride” was…. after almost six weeks off the bike (give or take a spin class).

4) Why do I still have crutches leaned up against the wall?  For fear? For decoration?

5) The sign over the treadmill says:  “When you are going through hell, keep going.”  I should have been facing that sign during the ride today.  Something about wearing a boot on a bike feels a little hell-ish.

6) Even after a busy day weekend life, at least I tried to do something todayHow much I have “lost,” physically, from being down is borderline demoralizing… but I am realizing that the “comeback” is just gonna be hard. Not like triathlon isn’t hard enough to begin with…

7) I thought alot about missing New Orleans 70.3 on this ride today, and I decided that it’s a good thing that I’m not doing the race. I’m not sure why, but I figured it’s a good state of mind.

8) I am without kids in this picture. Meaning my saint of an Expert husband must have been watching them. I hope.

9) I need to throw that t-shirt in the trash.  It’s 14 years old.  Really.

10) I wonder, really… how it’s going to feel to… completely start over again.  I will be essentially a baby triathlete again. All that work.  And I will start over. There is no amount of swimming and chest presses in the world to make up for 30 miles a week of running… I just have to accept that I will be back at ground zero, with a tender foot.  I know there is a lesson here.  I feel it.

I think this is the lesson:  we all must simply recognize how amazing racing and training really feels, how much it does for us emotionally… and that’s the stuff that keeps us going (and coming back).  I. can’t. wait.

Have a great week everyone.  Love to you all.

  1. Ironically enough, my bed, looks like yours… with multiple piles of laundry. We all have our priorities. 🙂

Hey, have you given any thought to doing an order of the s/b/m tech shirts with the
"triathlon is a mother" tagline? I have 3 ladies, plus me, who would want them for sure!

As far as missing NOLA7 70.3, or not missing, or being okay with missing… I felt the same way about Galveston 70.3 — and Lance was racing! Thought I'd regret it come race day, but I was completely okay. Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut — plus it got hot quick here! I have an Oly distance the end of April and I'm dreading the heat!

Here's to coming back as strong, faster, betterer (LOL) Swim Bike Mom 2.0!

  2. I'm glad you have your priorities right :). You are NOT starting over again. Remember all the important things you have gained in experience…confidence, knowledge. general experience. You know that the wetsuit with strangle you, so you don't have to be surprised when that happens. You know to dismount your bike coming into transition, so you don't have to topple over. You know how to fuel properly. You know how to push. You know how incredible it feels to reach milestones and finish good workouts. Even the pros have to take time off for broken bones or torn muscles, or surgery. They don't start at the beginning, they just have to catch up a bit.

  3. Donna – I'm totally going to do another batch of the shirts… but gotta finish off this first batch first! 🙂

  4. Awesome on round 2 shirts with "T is a M" of the shirts! I definitely want in!!!

Carrie said something (she's so smart!) that reminded me of all the pros I saw this past weekend making choices to continue, or stop and race another day. Some had flats… some had injuries. Not one of them seemed like they regretted a choice. Of course pros get paid to train and have all the time they need to do so, but even they have tough calls to make! And she's right… your not starting over… just picking up where you left off. 🙂

  5. I am in the midst of my "comeback" from 7 months of doing nothing due to my "non-injury medical condition", aka pregnancy. I thought I would be starting from zero too. But I actually didin't have to start literally at ground zero, and I have been pleasantly surprised that it isn't taking nearly as long to ramp up as the first time around.

  6. Not much longer now, right? You know, you really aren't starting over like a newbie. You know what it is like this time around, you have been there and you know that you can get there again. If you were starting fresh, you would have all those annoying doubts about whether or not you can actually do it. This time around, you know you can do it you just have to put in the work. Piece of cake 🙂 (did I say cake… umm piece of apple? doesn't really have the same ring…)

  7. I don't necessarily think you'll be starting over at ground zero.

I say this based on the fact that I didn't train for nearly 2 years, thought I would be starting at ground zero but once I got into it discovered I was definitely NOT. It was hard and it's not like I retained all that fitness but the ramp up took a lot less and felt easier than it did the first time around.

The body remembers A LOT. Guess we'll find out soon enough when you're cleared to train again. 🙂 That's going to be EXCITING!

  8. I love that you have a spin bike at your house. You are a tough cookie and will be fine. Hard work pays off and I know you won't give up.
