Sometimes the hardest part about triathlon is moving forward when you’re riding solo.  When you are the only spinner in the room, there is no music, the lights are dim, and it’s 4:30 in the morning.  Or, the only bike on the road.  The only runner on the path. The craziest lonely fish in the pool.

The only human for (what seems like) 100 square miles.

The self-motivation factor of triathlon is teaching me alot about myself.

At the end of the day, each training session is mine.  Every piece of food (good or bad) that I put in my mouth is my choice.  Every “snoozed” second I sleep in is my choice (and sometimes, the snooze button is the better option).

My race is up to me, my life is mine, and I might as well go left, right, left and keep moving forward.

Eventually, I might find myself right where I had only once dared to dream.

“Sometimes you just feel tired.
You feel weak and when you feel weak you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that sh*t out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.”

  1. I was singing "All By Myself" (a la Celine Dion) at the top of what was left of my lungs on the bike portion Saturday because there was NO ONE around. And it's not because I was at the front of the pack!

  2. What a great post. And so very true. I've struggled big time this summer with training on the bike alone. I'm finally starting to master it. But yes, indeed, it is very lonely at times and you really have to dig deep to keep at it. This is all I thought about when I was spectating at Iron Man Lake Placid. How much inner strength those athletes have. It's incredibly inspiring.

  3. So very true… I do a lot of my training alone and actually don't mind it but there are times where it would be easy to cut the run or bike early and call it a day. You definitely have to be dedicated to the end result!

  4. So true, and sometimes I feel like that just trying to make it through the day.

Amber …. I love your comment, made me giggle, thank you 🙂
