I wore Paper Pants this evening.  For fun.  Okay, not for fun.  For an orthopedic exam. I waited for two hours to see the doctor, an hour of which was wearing these Paper Pants….

….I was bored, and I had my iPhone, and I couldn’t let myself wear Paper Pants for no real reason.  So I present you with a photo montage of me and the sexy blue Paper Pants.  Paper Pants porn, if you will.

Alexander McQueen will be featuring this particular
pair of the Paper Pants in the Spring collection.
In this wear-to-work look, we paired the Paper
Pants with a nice blazer and simple black tank.

Paper Pants on the move.  Fun and flirty.
This is the Paper Pants Day to Night transition wear,
easily dressed up with some Tahitian pearls.
Alright, that’s enough of that.
So I was at the orthopedist because my right knee is killing me.  Started out of the blue last night, going down the stairs – not an injury of sort – just a sudden noticeable pain… and the pain really showed its butt during a squat down to pick up a paper clip this afternoon.  Ouch.  Luckily, I was able to get in to Resurgens in Lawrenceville tonight and get some x-rays and a professional opinion.
Diagnosis: Patellar tendinitis. Jumper’s Knee. Ouch.
Doesn’t look much like a Jumper’s Knee to me.  Bummer, but also, whew.  Could have been a tear or something worse, so I am relieved.  My x-rays did show a funny shaped patella.  Super.
Wiki says, that Jumper’s Knee is “an overuse injury from repetitive overloading of the extensor mechanism of the knee. It can also be caused by drug use.”  Wait… drug use?  Okay.  Well, I became a lawyer so I clearly had a crack smoking habit at some point, but not recently.
I also find it interesting that the injury arises when “the microtears exceed the body’s healing mechanism… unless the activity is stopped.”   Exceed the body’s healing mechanism.  Yep, that sounds about right.  Until the activity is stopped.  Oh boy.  Stopped??
After a final phone call with Coach Monster this evening, he addressed the physical, internal, emotional and work stress and how this knee issue is probably yes, from overuse, but also my body forcing me to slow down a little and re-center myself.  I tend to agree.  Obviously, my post from earlier today is not from someone who’s center has been grounded very well lately.
Made me think about my happy place… from just a month ago.
So what’s the plan?
I’m to rest the knee for no less than one week and preferably three (!).  But I can swim and do spinning with no heavy resistance. Coach M is going to formulate a good plan for me that I am ordered to follow.  Otherwise, ice and rest.  Hope for New Orleans, but give myself a good solid break.  And whine to you guys only when absolutely necessary.

  1. Oh good!! I am glad it didn't turn out to be something that would totally scrap your New Orleans plans! R&R can be a tough pill to swallow, but it sounds like you are on the right track. HANG IN THERE!!! I've got fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

  2. Happy to hear that you got to see the doctor and that they were able to give you a reason for the pain. And you have a plan. I too was in a pair of those lovely ortho shorts yesterday and am on a similar 2 week rest. Speed work at the track on Tuesday led to pop-click-crack in my right knee and couldn't walk. Great. 3 days later still limping and my ortho has no answer (no swelling, repaired ACL in tact) except rest, wait and see. Super frustrating. I feel your pain but I know that we will both get through this. Our bodies will heal damn it!

  3. Glad to hear it isn't something more serious!

Paper pants would cut down on laundry and the kids could draw on them. I don't see a down side except people might take my picture in Walmart :-).

  4. A lot of times, tendon issues are related to poor mobility and/or strength in certain muscles. If you don't feel better in the amount of rest time he gave you, I'd recommend seeing a physical therapist ASAP before it gets worse. I'm just coming off of a 4-month running hiatus because of pretty bad achilles tendonitis that could have been prevented if I dealt with the pain in the months before that instead of run though it.

    Good luck!

  5. So glad it's not more serious! I've donned the paper shorts, but I dare say, your fashion show far outdid my moment with them.

  6. I agree with the rest script. You can do pool running along with your regular scheduled swimming since it is low impact. Hang in there.

  7. Yay, so happy this is nothing too terribly serious. Rest, rest, rest! Trust me, I have been ordered do nothing except swim (with the pull buoy) and it SUCKS, but it's something. Try to enjoy what you can do and not stress about what you can't do! Praying for a quick recovery!

  8. Yeah, those are some awesome paper shorts. 🙂 Sounds for sure like recovery is in order. While you're recovering though, you might want to check out the ironman shop online… bunch of Miami 70.3 apparel in the clearance section… cheap! Just sayin'

  9. There is nothing wrong with taking a break and resting up! Plus, you really are just chillaxing on the running and hard biking. The swimming and spinning is always nice to work on so you don't get rusty. I'm glad you at least know what's going on!
