Well, I did it.  I rode fifty miles.  My time was 3:10:24, an average of 15.5mph. A few observations about the half-century distance:

1)  ouch;
2)  owie; and
3)  owwwwwwww (&*@&#!).
I felt pretty darn good at mile thirty.  But by thirty-eight, my legs were hating me. Not to mention my girl parts. And I have the great Adamo saddle.  Still.  Ow.
And when I made it to mile forty, my knees and hammers were yelling expletives at me. Loud, hateful expletives. I had a super tasty espresso Clif Shot which took me from mile forty to forty-three pretty well, but after that, the final seven miles was nothing short of straight suffering.  Good old fashioned teeth-gritting suffering.
As usual, I encountered interesting things on my ride:
1) a group of cyclists trying to round up some huge snake out of the path with a small stick (like the size of a chopstick);
2) a little old walking lady yelling “watch where you’re going, you big GOON” to a cyclist who apparently passed her too closely; and
3) a thirty-something couple walking with no less than thirty ankle biter dogs, while wearing matching vinyl solar suits.

(Poor tired Antonia)

A good day, though. I am glad to have the fifty miler under my belt.  Coach Monster just finished my schedule, and this week is a doozy (leaving next week to be nothing but a recovery week – it has to be).

On the books for this coming week:
a two mile swim, a five mile run, two spin classes, two ab workouts, a strength workout, an ELEVEN MILE RUN (&%*@!), a stability workout, a continuous swim workout, and topping off Sunday with a brick of 44 miles, plus 4 mile run.

I hurt just re-reading that paragraph.   Have a great week, friends!

  1. Way to go Meredith! 50 is a big big accomplishment. Only 6 more to get to half iron distance!
