This morning, I swam 46 lengths of the outside pool, or 23 laps. That’s great for me, but I have no idea how far that is. So, I called the gym to get the scoop.

The inside pool at Concourse Athletic Club is 25 meters. The outside pool is 25 yards. I employed the Expert (my husband) to do this fuzzy math.

Here’s the cheat sheet.

25 meter pool
One mile: 64.4 lengths; 32.2 laps
Half mile: 32.2 lengths; 16.1 laps
Quarter-mile: 16.1 lengths; 8 laps

25 yard pool
One mile: 70.4 lengths; 35.2 laps
Half-mile: 35.2 lengths; 17.6 laps
Quarter-mile: 17.6 lengths; 8.8 laps

I swam 46 lengths of the outside pool (so 23 laps). Therefore, I swam over a half mile today. Yay me. I was still confused as to how to calculate exactly how far. So I asked the Expert to break it down for me.

He said, that basically the idea is to multiply the number of laps by the distance for a lap (75 ft for the 25 yard/oustide pool, and 82 feet for the 25 meter/inside pool) then divide by the number of feet in a mile.

25 meter pool:
(82 x number of lengths)/5280 feet in a mile
Exampe: if had swam 46 lengths on the inside pool = (82 x 46)/5280 = 0.71 mile

25 yard pool:

(75 x number of lengths)/5280 feet in a mile
For example, today I did 46 lengths = (75 x 46)/5280 = 0.65 mile

Therefore, today I swam 0.65 mile. Yaay me again.
